  8. walk users through this.  I would agree with everybody
  9. that this problem is really stupid and confusing.  There
  10. isn't anything we can do about it before True Type.  The
  11. problem is trying to get 14th century technology (fonts)
  12. to work with many different types of 20th century technology
  13. (screens and printers).

  26.  Upgrading Symbol Fonts for Windows 3.00 Application Note      [W_WinWord]

  31.  This application note describes the procedures to properly install 
  32.  Microsoft Word Symbol fonts for those who have been using Word for 
  33.  Windows version 1.00 under Windows version 2.11 and have upgraded to 
  34.  Windows 3.00. 
  35.   
  36.  If you had the Symbol fonts installed under Windows version 2.11, skip 
  37.  to the "Upgrading the *.PFM Files" section. Otherwise, use the 
  38.  procedure described in the "Installing Symbol Fonts" section. All 
  39.  instructions in this application note assume that you have first 
  40.  successfully installed Windows 3.00. 
  41.   
  42.  Note: If you installed the Symbol fonts under Windows 2.11, you will
  43.  have a PCLFONTS subdirectory on the root directory of the drive that
  44.  contained Windows 2.11. 
  45.   
  46.  References to the LaserJet in this document include both the PCL/HP 
  47.  LaserJet and the HP LaserJet III printer drivers.

  49.  Installing Symbol Fonts 
  50.  -----------------------

  52.  If you have been using Word for Windows under Windows version 2.11 or 
  53.  Windows 3.00 and did not install the Symbol fonts previously, install 
  54.  the Symbol fonts using the method below. 
  55.   
  56.  Before you perform this procedure, you need to know where your soft 
  57.  font files are located on your hard disk. If you installed Windows 
  58.  version 2.11 on Drive C, these files are in the subdirectory 
  59.  C:\PCLFONTS. 
  60.   
  61.   1. Start Windows and open the Control Panel. 
  62.  
  63.   2. Choose the Printers icon. 
  64.  
  65.   3. Select the PCL/HP LaserJet (or LaserJet III) printer from the 
  66.      Installed Printers list box. 
  67.    
  68.   4. Choose Configure. 
  69.  
  70.   5. Choose Setup. 
  71.  
  72.   6. Choose Fonts to go to the Printer Font Installer dialog box. 
  73.  
  74.   7. Choose Add Fonts. 
  75.  
  76.   8. Insert the Word for Windows disk that contains the Symbol fonts 
  77.      (the 5.25-inch Conversions Disk or the 3.5-inch Setup Disk) in 
  78.      Drive A. 
  79.  
  80.   9. Leave the default drive selection as A:\ and press ENTER. 
  81.  
  82.  10. Select the Symbol fonts from the list box on the right. 
  83.  
  84.  11. Choose Add. The program will suggest copying the soft fonts to 
  85.       C:\PCLFONTS. You can use this directory or specify another 
  86.       location. Press ENTER. 
  87.  
  88.  12. After the soft fonts are copied to the list box on the left, 
  89.      choose Exit. 
  90.  
  91.  13. Choose OK three times to close the dialog boxes and return to the 
  92.      Control Panel. 
  93.  
  94.  14. Close the Control Panel. 
  95.  
  96.  15. Go to the "Upgrading the *.PFM Files" section. 
  97.   
  98.  Upgrading the *.PFM Files 
  99.  --------------------------- 
  100.  
  101.  The Symbol fonts installed by the Word Setup program are designed for 
  102.  Windows version 2.11. To use them with Windows 3.00, you must upgrade 
  103.  the *.PFM files. Before performing the following procedure, be sure
  104.  you know the location of the soft font files. If you installed Windows
  105.  version 2.11 on Drive C, these files are in the root directory of
  106.  Drive C in the PCLFONTS subdirectory. 
  107.   
  108.  1. From within Windows, choose the DOS Prompt icon to go to the DOS 
  109.     prompt. 
  110.  
  111.  2. Insert the Word for Windows disk containing the Symbol fonts 
  112.     (the 5.25-inch Conversions Disk or the 3.5-inch Setup Disk) in Drive 
  113.     A. 
  114.  
  115.  3. From the DOS prompt, type the following command and press ENTER
  116.   
  117.        copy a:\symbol.w3\*.PFM location 
  118.   
  119.     where location is the drive and directory where the soft fonts are 
  120.     installed -- for example: 
  121.   
  122.        copy a:\SYMBOL.W3\*.PFM C:\PCLFONTS 
  123.   
  124.     Note: The Word for Windows Conversions Disk and the Setup Disk 
  125.     contain two directories: SYMBOL contains the Symbol fonts for
  126.     Windows version 2.11, which you no longer need.  
  127.   
  128.     SYMBOL.W3 contains the Symbol .PFM files for Windows version 
  129.     3.00, which are the upgrades you now need. 
  130.  
  131.  4. Type exit and press ENTER to return to the Program Manager. 
  132.   
  133.  Rebuilding the Font Database 
  134.  ---------------------------- 
  135.  
  136.  If you did not have any soft fonts previously installed for Windows or 
  137.  Word for Windows, the Symbol fonts are now ready for use. However, if 
  138.  you installed any soft fonts previously (Symbol or otherwise), you
  139.  must now rebuild the printer's font database in order to use the
  140.  Symbol fonts. To rebuild the database, do the following: 
  141.   
  142.  1. Start Word for Windows. 
  143.  
  144.  2. From the File menu, choose New, and then choose the OK button. 
  145.  
  146.  3. From the File menu, choose Printer Setup. 
  147.  
  148.  4. Select the PCL/HP LaserJet (or LaserJet III) printer from the 
  149.     Printer list box and choose Setup. 
  150.  
  151.  5. If you did not install the Symbol fonts before receiving this 
  152.     application note, use Method 1 below. If you previously installed 
  153.     the Symbol fonts under Windows version 2.11, you can use either 
  154.     Method 1 or Method 2 below. 
  155.   
  156.  Method 1 
  157.  --------
  158.  
  159.  a. Choose Fonts to go to the Printer Font Installer dialog box. Listed 
  160.     in the box on the left are the soft fonts that are currently 
  161.     installed for the LaserJet driver, including the newly installed 
  162.     Symbol fonts. 
  163.   
  164.  b. Select any one of the Symbol fonts. You may need to use the scroll 
  165.     bar to scroll down through the list if you have a number of soft 
  166.     fonts installed. 
  167.   
  168.  c. Choose Edit. Choose OK. Be sure to not change any of the settings 
  169.     displayed in the Edit dialog box. 
  170.   
  171.  d. Choose Exit to leave the Printer Font Installer dialog box. 
  172.   
  173.  e. Choose OK twice to close the Printer Setup dialog boxes and return 
  174.     to Word for Windows. 
  175.   
  176.     Note: After choosing OK the second time you may see a dialog box in 
  177.     the upper-left corner of the screen that says, "Building Font 
  178.     Database." This box displays a running percentage of completion as
  179.     Word for Windows rebuilds the font database.

  181.  Your Symbol fonts are now properly installed.

  183.  Method 2
  184.  --------
  185.   
  186.  a. Select any one of the cartridges in the Cartridges list box. 
  187.   
  188.  b. Choose OK twice to close the Printer Setup dialog boxes and return 
  189.     to Word for Windows. 
  190.   
  191.     Note: After choosing OK the second time you may see a dialog box in 
  192.     the upper-left corner of the screen that says, "Building Font 
  193.     Database." This box displays a running percentage of completion
  194.     as Word for Windows rebuilds the font database. Your Symbol fonts
  195.     are now properly installed. 
  196.   
  197.  c. Important: From the File menu, choose Printer Setup and deselect the 
  198.     cartridge you selected in Step a. (This step avoids printing problems
  199.     due to selecting a cartridge font that you do not actually have.) 
  200.     If you still have problems and the Symbol fonts do not display on the
  201.     screen and/or do not print, we recommend that you remove the Symbol 
  202.     soft fonts from your system and start from the beginning with the 
  203.     "Installing Symbol Fonts" procedure.  
  204.   
  205.  To Remove the Symbol Fonts 
  206.  
  207.   1. Start Word for Windows. 
  208.  
  209.   2. From the File menu, choose New, and then choose the OK button. 
  210.  
  211.   3. From the File menu, choose Printer Setup. 
  212.  
  213.   4. Select the PCL/HP LaserJet (or LaserJet III) printer from the 
  214.      Printer list box. 
  215.  
  216.   5. Choose Setup. 
  217.  
  218.   6. Choose Fonts to go to the Printer Font Installer dialog box. In 
  219.      the list box on the left are the fonts currently installed for the
  220.      LaserJet driver. 
  221.    
  222.   7. Select all of the Symbol fonts. (Press the SPACEBAR to select each 
  223.      of the Symbol fonts or if you are using a mouse, click each font.)
  224.      You may need to use the scroll bar to scroll through the list if
  225.      you have a number of soft fonts installed.  
  226.  
  227.   8. Choose Delete.  
  228.  
  229.   9. When the message "Remove corresponding font file(s) from disk?" 
  230.     appears, choose Yes.  
  231.  
  232.  10. Choose Exit. 
  233.  
  234.  11. Choose OK twice to leave the Printer Setup dialog boxes and return 
  235.      to Word for Windows. 
  236.  
  237.  12. Perform the steps in the "Installing Symbol Fonts" and "Upgrading 
  238.      *.PFM Files" procedures. 
  239.   
  240.  If you are still having difficulty upgrading the Symbol fonts for use 
  241.  with Windows 3.00 after following all of the above instructions, please
